When I set the "Show Navigation" setting for a specific article to "Hide", I still see the navigational buttons on the page.

Is show navigation selected for any menu link related to this article?

It's a very simple site. The article can only be accessed from the homepage, through a "Category Blog" layout. When I go into the menu item and edit its settings, Setting "Show Navigation" to "Use Article Settings", still shows the navigation (even when the article has it disabled).

Oh so perhaps it is the use article settings that isn't working. Can you try changing the menu to hide and see if that works?

Can I re-open this? I'm seeing similar behaviour:

Set an article to Hide navigation. Set that article as a featured item. Edit "home" menu item -> Advanced Options ->Article Options to "Use Article Settings". Navigate to homepage, click on one of the homepage articles and the Next/Prev buttons are still visible.

Setting this to confirmed after testing against the master.

1. It looks like the setting gets saved in the database (show_item_navigation).

But this setting is later not passed properly, as in the view, $this->item->show_item_navigation stays to 1, no matter which values is saved.

2. There is in Protostar no codeblock that checks this value (if it's set or not).

I have fixed the issue .The solution is

Open the file plugins\content\pagenavigation.php

On line no: 141

    Old code : $query->select('a.id,,' . $case_when . ',' . $case_when1)......

    Newcode : $query->select('a.id,a.attribs,' . $case_when . ',' . $case_when1)....

Just add a.attribs

And after line no: 211 add the following line

$objAttrib=json_decode($rows[$location]->attribs);
                if($objAttrib->show_item_navigation!='' && intval($objAttrib->show_item_navigation)==0)
                {
                  $row->prev = '';
                  $row->next = '';
                }

Now its working properly
