Joomla 3 series end of support

In a few weeks, Joomla! 3.7 will be released. We have also finalised our roadmap for the remainder of the 3.x series and have marked Joomla! 3.9 as the final release of the series.

We have planned our final two releases of Joomla! 3.x series and they are as follows:

  • Joomla! 3.8 will be released approximately 3 months after 3.7 and will finalise the new routing system. The 3.8 release will be lead by Michael Babker.
  • Joomla! 3.9 will be released in conjunction with 4.0 and will include API backports to ensure a smooth migration between the two major series. They are planned to be released simultaneously and both will be lead by George Wilson.

After the release of 3.7, primary focus will be finalising the new routing system and preparing the 3.8 release then toward 4.0 and beyond. As a result, this means that 3.9 will be the final release of the 3.x series and that 3.x as a whole will soon reach end of support. Also, at this point most feature proposals should be directed toward the 4.0 release; minor features may be evaluated and included in one of the final 3.x releases. This will be at the discretion of the release leads.

Joomla! 3.9, as the final release, will be supported for a period of two years once it is released.
Bug and security support will be ensured for a window of 12 to 18 months, the remaining time will be security support only.
